Ballast water management system

NORTA MIT company is the representative of the Headway Technology Co. Ltd, the producer of systems for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments.

Shipping moves over 80% of the world's commodities and transfers approximately 3 to 5 billion tons of ballast water internationally each year.

Ballast water is absolutely essential to the safe and efficient operation of modern shipping, providing balance and stability to un-laden ships. However, it may also pose serious threats to ecology, economy and health.

There are thousands of marine species that may be carried in ships' ballast water, basically anything that is small enough to pass through a ship's ballast water intake ports and pumps. If these organisms survive transport to other parts of the globe, their impact can be devastating. Such invasions can jeopardize the local ecosystem, and even pose threats to human health. Usually, their effects are irreversible.

The introduction of invasive marine species into new environments by ships' ballast water, attached to ships' hulls and via other vectors has been identified as one of the four greatest threats to the world's oceans. In 2004, IMO adopted the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, which will phase in requirements for ballast water treatment over the coming years.

Ballast Water Management System OceanGard® BWMS

oceanguard BWMS is developed and provided by Headway Technology Co., Ltd together with Harbin Engineering University. Its unique structure and optimum design, allows vessels, during delivery of ballast waters, not to pose threat for sea life in surrounding waters, thus keeping sea ecology.

Advanced Electrocatalysis Oxidation Process (AEOP)

Hydroxyl radicals, being formed in the course of cleaning by means of the AEOP technology, disappear during several nanoseconds. The radicals have high sterilization effectiveness that can sub-stantively kill different microbes, bacteria, viruses and dormant ovum in ballast water (wide sterilization range) in chain reaction mode.

Sterilization process can be complete inside EUT block Concentration of TRO (the general residual oxidation) can be regulated within 2 ppm so TRO can carry out expanded functions of control in ballast tanks.

Corrosion-free

Hydroxyl radicals, formed in the course of cleaning, disappear during several nanoseconds. Sterilization process completely comes to the end in the EUT block. Thus concentration of TRO remains within 2 ppm. By results of long operation the system proved to be safe and reliable, and the water conditioned by means of oceanguard BWMS doesn't cause corrosion of the vessel’s hull.

Compact design; High quality spare parts

Compact structure, small size, simple installation and maintenance. BWMS may be installed on different vessels with different internal structures. High quality materials and spare parts with long life cycle are used for all components.

Treatment in one passage

Full process of cleaning happens during ballast water intake; there is no necessity to make cleaning at discharge of ballast water. Is suitable for vessels of all types.

Energy efficiency

Low operational costs. For cleaning of 1000 m3 of ballast water approximately 17 kWh of energy is required.

Explosion safety

oceanguard BWMS has the explosion safety Certificate. This enables to install it in pump station premises of oil-tankers and liquefied petroleum gas carrying ships.

Wide range of application

oceanguard BWMS provides excellent productivity when using in fresh and sea water. Discharged processed ballast water is ecologically friendly.

On this video you can see how OceanGard Ballast Water Management System from the Headway Technology Co.Ltd works.

AEOP Technology of oceanguard BWMS

oceanguard BWMS is developed by Headway Technology Co., Ltd. together with Harbin Engineering University. OceanGard® BWMS adopts Advanced Electrocatalysis Oxidation Process (AEOP) to kill microbes, bacteria, viruses and dormant ovum in water by using special semiconductor materials under electron excitation and the hydroxyl radicals (-OH) formed by water molecules.

Hydroxyl radical (-OH) produced in AEOP is one of the most active substances with very strong oxidizability. It can have different kinds of chemical reactions with almost all biological macromolecules, microorganisms and other organic pollutants instantaneously. Besides, it has extremely fast reaction rate and strong negative charge electron affinities. The end products of reaction are CO2, H2O and traces of inorganic salt without any hazardous residuals. Therefore, the treated water can be discharged out of board without any pollution. The chemical reaction which involves hydroxyl radical is free radical reaction, and it is extremely fast. Generally, the reaction rate with organics is over 109 L/ (mol.s)

Moreover, the form and existence time of hydroxyl radicals is quite short, which is less than 10-12 s, so that the high efficiency and effectiveness of OceanGard® BWMS can be guaranteed.

The EUT unit is a basic element of system oceanguard BWMS.

Each separate block has productivity from 100 to 3000 m3/hour. The unit consists of two parts: Electrocatalysis and Ultrasonic Units. Electro-catalysis block is capable to produce huge amount of hydroxyl radicals and other highly active oxidizing substances for neutralization of all organisms in ballast water during several nanoseconds. During water sterilization the ultrasonic block can regularly clean electrocatalysis block surface which provides long effectiveness of electrocatalytic material. Completely process of water sterilization takes place inside EUT unit.

Advantages of the control panel:

Local and remote control;

• Malfunction can be transmitted to a control system of the vessel;

• Siemens LED monitor displays a condition of components of system in real time;

• The programmable Siemens controller traces indications of sensors in real time;

• Storage of parameters in memory within 24 months. Parameters can be printed at any time;

• Simple control.

BWMS filter

BWMS filter carries out completely automatic back-flushing of the filter which can happen at the same time from a filtration and the return circulation. Filtration precision is 50 μm. That enables to remove organisms with size over 50 μm to prevent sedimentation in tanks.

Advantages of the filter

• Provides the maximum filtration;

• Automatic back-flushing during a filtration;

• High efficiency is proved by results of testing in various waters;

• The reliable design is easy-to-work;

• Low losses of pressure aren't present need to install the supercharger pump.

The filtration stage has significance during ballast water treatment.

According to requirements made by International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments IMO 2004, both ballast water and sediment are essential compo-nents. Thus, practical survey of sediment including the one in the ballast tanks defines that the sedi-ment in the ballast tanks not only gives way to growth of organisms but may lead to serious corrosion of hull. The figures show comparison of sediments and corrosion on the same ballast tank.
